GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases where there is a progressive loss of nerve fibre in the retina and optic nerve. It becomes more common as we age. Mostly it develops with no symptoms and must therefore be identified by the eye professional at an eye test. This is most often the optometrist, who will examine and refer to the ophthalmologist. Medical, laser and surgical treatments are under the care of the ophthalmologist with communication and co-operation between the two specialists.

Hawkes Bay Eye have up to date protocols, visual field and retinal screening equipment and perform laser and surgical treatments when necessary.

Most important is early diagnosis.

Glaucoma NZ recommends a screening examination every five years from the age of 45 and every three years after age 60. If there is a close family history there is a much greater risk and these intervals are reduced. With early diagnosis and treatment glaucoma does not lead to visual disability.
