MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration becomes more common with ageing and affects the central vision. Because it limits driving and reading, it can have a significant effect on the quality of life. Some forms can be treated and central vision retained.

Early signs of macula disease will often be noticed by your optometrist at routine eye tests. This is the opportunity to explain the condition, to encourage preventative measures and to identify early warning signs.

The ophthalmologist provides both an advisory and treatment role. The use of anti-VEGF injections has had a remarkable effect in reducing macular vision loss.

Hawkes Bay Eye has high quality macular scanning equipment and well established protocols of care. John Beaumont conducted the macular treatment clinic at the Eye Clinic HB DHB for several years when it was being established.
